Duties: Otolaryngology (pronounced oh/toe/lair/in/goll/oh/jee) is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngologists are physicians trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck.

Education: Apply to complete four years of medical school. During the last two years, you can take specialized coursework in otolaryngology. Several ENT residency programs stand out among others, including Johns Hopkins and Tufts. Plan to spend anywhere from 3-5 years in an ENT residency program.


Demand: ENT doctors, formally known as otolaryngologists, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and medical conditions associated with the ears, nose and throat. ENT doctors also treat structural problems of the face and neck. Otolaryngologists treat many conditions, including problems such as hearing loss, balance issues, ringing in the ears, facial tics, nosebleeds, sleep apnea and snoring, sinus problems, tonsillitis and throat cancer. They are also surgeons, and may perform plastic surgery and facial reconstruction.
