Duties and Responsibilities: Known to most just as their ‘dentist’ a “general dentist” is primarily concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of oral disease. This includes but is not limited to cavities (caries), cracked or broken teeth, gum disease and the like.

Education: To become a dentist, you will have to have a doctorate degree in dental surgery or dental medicine. You must also complete a 1-2 year residency and be licensed in the state you intend to work. You need to have good communication, leadership and problem-solving skills, along with becoming detail-oriented and patient. You should also have good dexterity and physical stamina.

Demand or need for this profession: Dentists must be licensed in the state(s) in which they work. Licensure requirements vary by state, although candidates usually must graduate from an accredited dental school and pass written and practical exams.
